Chandra Shekhar Azad

Chandra Shekhar Azad (birth name: Chandra Shekhar Tiwari) was born on 23rd July, 1906, in Bhavra Village, Alirajpur District, Madhya Pradesh. He was an Indian Freedom fighter, revolutionary and head of Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). He was known to be the mentor of Bhagat Singh.

Childhood

Chandra Shekhar Azad was born to Sitaram Tiwari and Jagrani Devi. When he was only 15 years old he joined the non-cooperative movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. And thus, he was arrested along with other freedom fighters. The famous line “Name - 'Azad', father's name - 'Swatantra' (independent) and residence - 'Jail'“, was spoken by him when produced in the court. Since then he was called as Azad.

Education

Before joining the Non-Cooperation movement, Chandra Shekhar Azad took initial education in Sanskrit from Kashi Vidyapeeth, Banaras.

Career

After being arrested so young, Azad became more focused towards independence and directed his energy towards the same. He decided to target British officials and got involved in Kakori Train Robbery in 1925, the incident of Viceroy’s train and shooting of Saunders in1926, in order to take revenge of the murder of Lala Lajpatrai. He was committed towards seeing a free India with no discrimination so that each Indian could live as per his/her own will. He also wanted to bolster socialist principles for India’s prosperity.

At the end

Chandra Shekhar Azad was really fierce and firm. British police was highly afraid of him and kept on finding ways to hit him. But Azad kept his pledge of not being caught alive. Thus, he shot himself dead on 27 February 1931, at Alfred Park in Allahabad, when an informer ditched him by telling the British police about his whereabouts. Before killing himself, he was successful in killing several British Policemen and wounded others.

But before leaving he set an example for the Indians of not losing courage and feeling of patriotism. Stand by your promises and be fierce and determined. He inspires the generation. Thus, he is considered one of the greatest freedom fighters and revolutionaries of India.
